We at Speedshare are extremely passionate about flat sharing… not only does it help keep costs down, but it can be a really lovely way of life, no matter how old you are, whether you’re a student or working full time, got pets, are in a relationship, etc.

Recently there has been an increasing number of artificial flatshares: over-refurbished, office-style, managed apartments where new arrivals are put up together by agencies working for investors who couldn’t care less about whether there’s a working flat share, as long as the money keeps rolling in.

We’ve put together this manifesto to helpp you make your flat share a home. Please let us know what you think in the comments… if the community agrees we’ll add your ideas to our list!

Compromise

Accept that living with others means to be willing to compromise, and that isn’t a bad thing. It doesn’t mean that you’re weak and aren’t standing up for yourself; it just means that you’re a social human being capable of living with others.

Be ready for change! There will be changes in even the most perfect flat shares. Whether it’s someone leaving the flat or a flatmate becoming allergic to

Niceness

Try your best to be nice, and never a dick! Just because there isn’t a rule, that doesn’t mean you can do whatever you want. You’re not an animal, and if you want to be part of a good flat share you need to act like a human. If you leave a quarter spoonful of oil in the bottle, just replace it anyway.

Rules

Make (only important) rules! Whenever people live together there have to be a few rules… but if there are too many of them we feel uneasy and controlled.
Make sure you agree on the important things, e.g. “no parties after 23h on school nights”, “don’t leave your dirty dishes in the sink”, or “don’t leave all lights on for ages when you don’t need them”.
